A member of the Princeton Class of 1920, James G. Smith went on to become an economist and Princeton University professor.
The collection consists of writings, correspondence, notecards, filmstrips, and printed matter of Smith (Princeton Class of 1920), professor of economics at Princeton. The collection contains his two unpublished typed manuscripts, "Origins of Industries in New Jersey" and "History of New Jersey Manufacturing," with research material on such New Jersey industries as glass, textile, pottery and clay products, copper, iron and steel works, leather and shoes, shipbuilding, chemical, rubber, and telecommunications, covering approximately the period from 1750 through 1850. There are photographs and photostats of pictures of maps, early houses, mills, furniture, and machinery.
Arranged in the following order: Box 1: "History of New Jersey Manufacturing," "Origins of Industries in New Jersey"; Box 2: "Origins of Industries in New Jersey," Subject Files, before 1750, 1750-1800; Box 3: Subject Files, 1750-1800, 1800-1850; Box 4: Subject Files, 1800-1850, Miscellaneous; Box 5: Subject Files, Miscellaneous, Film; Boxes 6-8: Index Cards, reference notes & bibliographic notes on various industries and subjects; Boxes 9-11: occupations (names, place, description).
The papers were received by M. Halsey Thomas, University Archivist, from the History Dept. In 1974 they were transferred to A. Clark at Firestone Library.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process.
