Howard, Joseph, 1833-1908

Joseph Howard's career as a journalist was long and distinguished. As war correspondent for the New York Times during the Civil War, he was present at the 1st Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Ball's Bluff. He was arrested and imprisoned for 14 weeks in 1864 as a result of a journalistic burlesque known as the "Bogus Proclamation." He was later appointed official military recorder, reporting the trials of Confederate spies. Howard covered many famous events of the 19th century, including the trial and execution of Charles Guiteau, the death and funeral of Ulysses S. Grant and the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Consists of Howard's scrapbooks of press clippings of articles he wrote over the years for several New York City newspapers -- The Sun, The New York Herald, The New York Recorder, and The Star -- often writing under the heading "Howard's Column," Howard's Letter," and "Howard's Gossip," or under the byline "Jugg." The scrapbooks include some letters, photographs, and memorabilia.
