Henry Woodhull Green was a New Jersey lawyer, justice, and statesman. Born in Maidenhead (now Lawrenceville), New Jersey, in 1804, Green attended the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) and graduated in 1820. He was admitted to the New Jersey bar in 1825 and practiced in Trenton. He served as a member of the New Jersey Assembly in 1842, a delegate to the National Whig Convention in 1844, and a delegate to the New Jersey Constitutional Convention in 1844. In 1846, he was appointed justice in the New Jersey Supreme Court. Green died in 1876.
The collection consists of correspondence, documents, and printed matter of the Green family of Trenton and Mercer County, New Jersey, including Henry Woodhull Green (Princeton Class of 1820), his parents, Elizabeth and Caleb Green, his brother, John Cleve Green, and his son, Charles Ewing Green. The collection contains correspondence between Henry Woodhull Green and family members, correspondence on legal matters between Green and clients, and letters relating to his position as a justice of New Jersey'' supreme court (1846-1860), as well as correspondence among other Green family members. There are also New Jersey documents including deeds, wills, indentures, articles of agreement, mortgages, military commissions, lists of sheriffs' sales, petitions, releases, estate accounts, and property maps. In addition, the collection contains miscellaneous correspondence and documents of Princeton University, the Presbyterian Church, and the Princeton Theological Seminary, as well as bills of the New Jersey Assembly in which Green served for one term (1842-1843).
Additional accessions include 32 letters (1885-1897) byf Charles Ewing Green to Edward L. Howe and an article of agreement (1885) regarding the purchase of property for Princeton University; a document (1801) of Mary Green regarding the manumission of a slave named "Cynthia"; and other material of Elmer Ewing Green, Henry Woodhull Green, and Richard M. Green, some of it related to "the new library of Princeton College."
