Overview and metadata sections

Newton, A. Edward (Alfred Edward), 1864-1940

Alfred Edward Newton (1863-1940) was an American essayist, bibliophile, and author.

The collection consists of letters by Newton, letters collected by him, and miscellaneous materials. Newton's correspondents include Baron Godfrey Rathbone Benson Charnwood, James L. Ford, Ronald Knox, Richard Le Gallienne, Shane Leslie, E. V. Lucas, Christopher Morley, Charles. G. Osgood, Agnes Repplier, Melancthon Woolsey Stryker, and Francis Wilson. In addition, there are autograph letters by Williams Hazlitt, Jr., Thomas Jefferson Hogg, William James Linton, and Theodosia Trollope. Among the miscellaneous materials is a typewritten copy of an article on Edward Bok's book Twice Thirty by Joseph Collins.

The following standard abbreviations, or their variations, are used to identify materials in this collection: ALS = autograph letter signed, TLS = typed letter signed, ANS = autograph note signed, AMsS = autograph manuscript signed, and TMsS = typed manuscript signed.

The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.

The collection is comprised of papers removed from the books donated to Princeton University by A. Edward Newton.

For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
