Overview and metadata sections
A graduate of Princeton (Class of 1901), Stephen French Whitman was an American novelist.
The collection consists primarily of manuscripts of Whitman, as well as correspondence and documents concerning their publication and the career of the author. Among the manuscripts are A Future (n.d.), "Helen" [1945?], and "Long Before Hatred" [1946?]. Correspondents include Harold Norling Swanson, Frederick Lewis Allen, Hugh MacNair Kahler, Harold Ober, Cecille B. DeMille, Whitney Darrow, and Robert Sterling Yard. Among the documents are copyrights for several of the author's works and agreements between the author and his publishers and literary agents.
The collection was formed as a result of a departmental practice of combining into one collection manuscript material of various accessions relating to a particular author.
This collection was donated by Wilford S. Conrow '1901 (AM 15906).
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
