Overview and metadata sections
The Iturbe e Iraeta family was a prominent Mexican merchant family of Basque origin that was active in Mexican colonial and interregional trade from the 1760s to the 1840s.
The collection consists of records of three successive generations of the Iturbe e Iraeta. Comprised of ledgers, letter books, collected incoming correspondence, commercial and hacienda accounts, and some personal papers (some of it on microfilm), the collection documents the family's Mexico-based mercantile trade activities (in cochineal, cocoa, sugar, etc.) and landed wealth during an important period of economic growth and political change. Included are letters to and from a variety of noted Mexican government and church officials, as well as prominent colonial merchants, miners, and nobility.
The collection was purchased in 1980.

Collection Inventory
Consists of the ledgers and account books, ranging from 1760 to the late 1830s.
Arranged chronologically.
Physical Description2 boxes
Ledger book kept by Francisco Ignacio de Iraeta between 1760 and 1783 of his commercial affairs. The ledger contains a listing, alphabetically by first name, of Iraeta's various clients, as well as detailed ongoing records of his business transactions with them. Running accounts of the quantities and prices of goods/products sold to and for this individual are supplemented by individual records of Iraeta's large, single purchases of good (to be resold). There are also records of Iraeta's accounts with relatives, in particular one of his expenditures on a nephew's education in Mexico (Josef Igancio de Iturbe). A few notations were made on certain accounts considerably later, in 1808-09 by Gabriel de Iturbe. In addition, the ledger book contains a few loose business letters and accounts dating from 1770. (Bound in leather, with some original ledger sheets included in plastic sleeves.)
Physical Description1 folder
Incomplete. Part of a ledger book which was probably kept by Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta. (These documents are paginated, showing Items 68-92, and thus suggest that this portion comprises the middle of a larger ledger book spanning a greater Item of years). Found in this portion are the running accounts Iturbe had with various merchants in and around New Spain, indicating the quantities and prices of good or products sold to or bought from these individuals as well as good sold on consignment. The accounts are fairly detailed, providing many other specifics (places, individuals, purposes) about these transactions. Also covered are transactions relating to political and military matters. (Two unbound signatures of the original book.)
Physical Description1 folder
Ledger book kept by Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta in Mexico between March 2, 1801 and March 24, 1803. The running account contained within would seem to be a principal and central record of Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta's general commercial and business affairs during this period. A wide variety of business interests and activities are represented (for example, trade, mining, income from landholdings, the "bill of payment" system), the majority of them pursued within the sphere of the colonial market. However, expenditures for personal and household items and for municipal or community organizations are also recorded, providing an additional perspective on the family's activities. Entries in the ledger suggest the existence of complementary account books for specific areas of the family's business interests. (Bound in leather.)
Physical Description1 folder
Account book kept by the Iturbe family, and probably by Gabriel Manuel de Iturbe and Leonardo Alvarez, for the period from January 1824 through April 1825. Recorded are a variety of commercial and financial operations and transactions with numerous clients and business partners. A wide range of commercial interests and ventures are indicated. It would seem from the level and kind of expenses recorded that this represents the account book of a family hacienda or similar large enterprise. No specific names or locations of the family enterprise are identified by this account book. (Bound in leather.)
Physical Description1 folder
Ledger book kept by Ignacio Muñoz, administrator of the Hacienda de Mazaquiahuac, for the early 1830s. The ledger book chronicles payments, debts, workdays, and death of workers on the Iturbe family sugar plantation located near Tlaxco and Izucar. Interspersed within the ledger book are loose letters to Muñoz from José Mariano Bonilla (his superior in charge at the hacienda) and from Francisco de Iturbe, as well as loose records of expenses/payments related to the hacienda and a record of burials for 1830. (Bound in leather.)
Physical Description1 folder
Incomplete. Part of a ledger book kept for the Hacienda de Mazaquiahuac. These documents provide an account of income from the Hacienda, as well as expenses, and are fairly detailed, indicating the source of profit, nature of expenses and particulars. The ledger book suggests something of the Hacienda's relations with neighboring haciendas, employees, merchants, etc. (One unbound signature of the original book.)

Physical Description1 folder
Letter book of outgoing correspondence for the period between February 27, 1795 and May 9, 1798. Begun by Francisco Ignacio de Iraeta in Mexico in 1795 it was continued upon his death (January 24, 1797) by Iraeta's nephew and son-in-low, Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta, who took over the family commercial enterprise. The content of the letters reflects Iraeta and Iturbe's concern with both commercial/business affairs and with more personal, family matters, though the primary focus of all the correspondence is commercial.
As revealed by the letter book, Iraeta and Iturbe's business contacts and correspondence over this period were largely with prominent individuals in a variety of major Spanish cities and major centers of trade in the Spanish colonies (for example, Havana, Manila, Lima, and Guayaquil). The two merchants' activities as factors of the Royal Company of the Philippines are illustrated as well in this collection of letters. Finally, the more personal correspondence (to relatives in Spain, Havana, and Guayaquil) provides considerable information about the Iturbe e Iraeta family network--its extension, its structure, and the nature of the interrelationships among its members.
Physical Description1 box
Letter book of outgoing correspondence kept by Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta (patriarch and head of the Iturbe commercial enterprise from 1797-1812) during the period of May 27, 1798 to May 30, 1801. The letters address primarily business and commercial concerns, although there are numerous more personal letters to a select group of close relatives.
As the letter book reveals, Iturbe's business contacts in this period were largely with prominent individuals in Havana, in a variety of major cities in Spain, and in Manila. He pursued to a lesser extent commercial interests with individuals in Lima, Guayaquil, New Orleans and Bayonne (France). Gabriel de Iturbe's activity as a factor of the Royal Company of the Philippines is well defined by this collection of correspondence as are his friendships and business relations with a number of prominent Spanish nobles and future high officials in colonial government.

One leather-bound book.
Letter book recording outgoing correspondence for the period between January 27, 1808 and January 25, 1809. This copybook was kept by Gabriel de Iturbe e Iraeta, patriarch and head of the Iturbe's commercial enterprise from 1797-1812. A section of leaves containing letters written between June 16 and July 23 1808 is missing from the copybook.
Virtually all of the correspondence addresses commercial and business matters, and reflects the wide range of the Iturbe family's business interests and activities. Among the numerous recipients of the letters figure prominent merchants, miners, landowners and government officials from Mexico and other parts of the Spanish colonies as well as Spain. Many of the letters, however, discuss as well as a variety of personal or family-related matters.
Physical Description1 box
One leather-bound book.
Letter book of outgoing correspondence kept by Gabriel Manuel de Iturbe e Iraeta between January 2, 1833 and April 23, 1834. The correspondence recorded in this letter book relates entirely to matters of business, pursued primarily within the confines of Mexico. As revealed by these letters, the Iturbe business interests circa 1833 centered around the sale of agricultural products and materials (corn, lumber, meat, and the like) produced ostensibly on family lands, as well as the trade in similar goods produced by friends/business partners. The Iturbe family seems also to have been active to a limited degree in small industry, specifically in the sale (and possibly production) of wheels, textiles, etc.
