Overview and metadata sections
The Princeton Footnotes is an all-male a cappella group at Princeton University that was founded in 1959. The organization that became the Footnotes emerged as a dispute within the Glee Club, which resulted in twelve of the Club's members leaving the Club to form a separate group, the Prospectors. The name "Prospectors" was chosen because many of the group's first members were part of the octet within the Glee Club of the same name. However, when the Prospectors applied for official recognition in February of 1961 as a separate singing group, the Undergraduate Music Council granted the organization recognition only on the condition that it select a different name, as the Council deemed the name to be "the property of the Glee Club." Thus, the Footnotes was established formally in the spring semester of 1961, with the following students as the group's first officers: James Benjamin '1962 (president), Joel Rosenman '1963 (vice president and secretary), and Stephen (Steve) Teich '1962 (musical director).
Since obtaining official recognition, the Footnotes have performed across the United States and across the world. Two highlights of the group's history include its performance at the Inaugural Ball for President George H. W. Bush in 1989 and its appearance on season four (2013) of NBC's "The Sing-Off." Outside of performing and recording music, the Footnotes also offer educational sessions that provide a cappella lessons to singers of various ages and experience levels.
The Princeton Footnotes Records consists primarily of digitized recordings of former Footnotes albums released between 1961 and 1987. The collection also includes two compilation albums and the organization's website. See descriptive notes for each series for further description.
