Overview and metadata sections
Nat Clymer was as a contract photographer for Princeton University from the early 1980s until the early 2000s. In his decades documenting different aspects of campus life and culture, Clymer was assigned to many departments and units of the university, most notably the Princeton Alumni Weekly. Clymer began his photography career with the United States Navy and then began work as a staff photographer for various news outlets in Central New Jersey, after which Clymer opened his own private photography business. Outside of his professional work, Clymer also founded of the New Brunswick (N.J.) chapter of Flashes of Hope and lectured part-time at the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information in the Journalism and Media Studies department.
The Nat Clymer Photographic Collection consists of nearly 14,000 images, primarily color 35mm slides and negatives, medium format [6cm X 7cm] color and black & white negatives & color transparencies, black & white contact sheets, as well as digital files. The photographs span Clymer's career as a contract photographer for the university, a period spanning the early portion of the 1980s and running through the early 2000s.
The collection offers a vivid portrayal of the University's campus through portraiture of buildings, faculty, students, and alumni engaged in a wide variety of activities. Many of the photographs in the collection were taken by Clymer on different assignments as a contract photographer, including assignments with the Advanced Technology Center for Photonics and Optoelectronic Materials (P.O.E.M.), the Development Office, the Princeton Materials Institute, and the Princeton Alumni Weekly, the latter of which comprises the bulk of the collection.
See series descriptions for more detailed information.
The collection is arranged into five series according to assignment. See series arrangement notes for more information.
The University Archives purchased the collection from Nat Clymer in June of 2015 (AR.2015.018).

The P.O.E.M. series contains the photographs taken by Clymer for the University's Advanced Technology Center for Photonics and Optoelectronic Materials (POEM) from 1987 until 2001. The Center was established in 1988 as a way to quicken the exchange of photonic technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace. Many of the images in the series feature Princeton faculty members and researchers conducting different aspects of scientific experimentation in their laboratories. The series, comprised of both published and unpublished work, will be especially useful for its vivid portrayal of Princeton engineers actively engaged in their research.
Materials retain their original order as when acquired by the University Archives.

The photos in this series retain their original order. Files were grouped by the creator according to the event date and subject.
The General series consists of photographs Clymer shot while on assignment to various schools and programs of the university, including the Wilson School, Computer Science, and Engineering. A few of the photographs' subjects overlap with those found in the PAW series, especially commencement, the Behrman Awards, and reunions. This series also contains the collection's only born-digital photographs, more than 800 images of the Princeton Class of 1982's 25th reunion in May of 2007.

The Princeton Alumni Weekly series reflects Clymer's assignment as a photographer assigned to various campus events that hosted or featured Princeton alumni. This series contains photographs from the 1980's and 1990's during which time Clymer was an independent contractor with the University working on various projects, one of which included the Princeton Alumni Weekly. This series comprises the bulk of the collection, and it includes photographs that the magazine printed as well as those that it did not make it to print. Folders are dated by the date on which they were taken, not by the date in which they appeared in the PAW.
Topics covered in the series include student activities (especially dance and athletics), alumni reunions and commencement, and a run of photographs documenting the dinners held in recognition of the Howard T. Behrman Awards, which are awarded annually to selected faculty members of Princeton's humanities departments, in recognition of research, publication, teaching, or other distinguished service to the University community. Coverage of the Behrman Awards can also be found in Series 3: General.
The Princeton Alumni Weekly series follows a chronological arrangement by year. The folders are grouped according to the rough title of the story that was later published in the Princeton Alumni Weekly.

The PMI series contains photographs Clymer took while on assignment with the Princeton Materials Institute, which began construction in 1991 and formally opened in the spring of 1993 as Bowen Hall. The institute was later renamed The Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM). Most of the photographs document the construction of the building itself, the dedication, and portraits of faculty members.
The PMI series retains the original order of materials, which is primarily by year.
