Overview and metadata sections
The President is the chief executive officer of the University. They preside at all meetings of the boards of trustees and of the faculty and at all academic functions at which they are present and represent the University before the public. The Trustee by-laws charge them with the general supervision of the interests of the University and with special oversight of the departments of instruction.
The Office of the President Records: Harold T. Shapiro document the administration of Princeton's eighteenth president, Harold T. Shapiro through correspondence, memoranda, press releases, and other materials. Topics found in the records include University finances, alumni fundraising, and Princeton's 250th anniversary celebration. Also present are records documenting Shapiro's interactions with students, faculty, staff, and various academic departments.

In the preparation of this Finding Aid's biographical section, the following resources were consulted: Select articles printed in The Daily Princetonian and The Trenton Times between 1987 and 2002. The Graduate School alumni file of Harold T. Shapiro, held at the Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library. Annual Reports of the President, 1988-2000.
The Office of the President still holds a small amount of records from the administration of Harold T. Shapiro. The eventual transfer of the remaining records is expected from the Office of the President.
These records were transferred from the Office of the President to the University Archives in periodic installments between July and September of 2001. A later transfer of general files occured in September 2008. Series 25 was added in June, 2016 (AR.2016.040).

The Academic series contains the records of the Office of the President that pertain to the academic departments, schools, and programs of Princeton University.

The Departments subseries includes information on the academic departments of Princeton University. Files contain general correspondence and information about each department, as well as specific reports and studies written by departments, investigations into the departments by outside committees, and information on funding. Also notable in this series is information regarding gender differences in the graduate program, memoranda about possible overcrowding of certain majors, and the History Department's Biographical Dictionary of Princeton Alumni.

The Schools subseries contain information regarding Princeton's four schools: the School of Architecture, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Graduate School, and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
The School of Architecture records contain general information as well as correspondence regarding a deanship search. The School of Engineering and Applied Science records contain advisory council materials as well as records of the individual departments which comprise the School, such as Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The Graduate School records contain materials documenting the planning of the Graduate School's centennial celebration and the school's finances, as well as correspondence documenting a deanship search. The records of the Woodrow Wilson School contain information pertaining to the Center of International Studies, a deanship search, and several conferences.

The Special Programs subseries contains memoranda, reports, financial plans, and correspondence relating to academic units at Princeton that operate independently of departments and schools. Most of the information found within this series concerns various programs within the University, specifically the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), Environmental Studies, Latin American Studies, and Material Science Center.

The Committees subseries concerns both special and standing committees of Princeton University. The records in this series contain meeting minutes and reports from notable special committees such as the President's Advisory Committee, the Campus Center Committee, and the Committee on Diversity. The President's Office subseries contain correspondence to and from Harold Shapiro. The correspondents include various internal and external organizations, businesses, institutions, and individuals. Some notable correspondence can be found in this series from former heads of state such as George H. W. Bush, William Clinton, and Mikhail Gorbachev. Also included are meeting minutes discussing the reorganization of various groups on campus.
