Overview and metadata sections

Princeton University. Department of Classics

The Department of Classics at Princeton University offers courses, both in English and in the original languages, that treat the whole range of ancient culture, from its mythology to its philosophy, law, and literature. The long history of the study of classics at the University owes much to the nature of higher education in the 18th and 19th centuries. In this time the study of the ancient world was considered so integral to any education that admission to the University called required a prerequisite of four years of latin with a fifth to be completed in the freshman year, a condition that was finally lifted in 1930. Many of Princeton's most notable names have been associated with the Department of Classics. Andrew Fleming West came to the college as Professor of Latin in 1883 and Robert F. Goheen was appointed to the faculty in 1948. Princeton remains a center for classical studies, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Consists of the records of the Department of Classics from the late 19th and early 20th century. Materials include three bound volumes containing the minutes of the graduate classics club, the classical seminary, and departmental reports. Also in the collection are bound senior theses from 1894-1910, and correspondence of the classics department graduate committee.
