Overview and metadata sections
The University Research Board, which consists of six faculty members from different departments, is an advisory committee to the president on all research conducted at Princeton University. From 1946-1959, this function was performed by its predecessor, the 5-member Committee on Project Research and Invention.
With the amount of research being done at the University as well as the level of funding this research required skyrocketing, it was decided that a more formal supervisory board was necessary to formulate general policies for the conduct of sponsored research as well as to review research proposals, and so the University Research Board was formed in 1959. In the 1970s with such massive projects as the Plasma Physics Laboratory looming on the horizon and the number of incoming research proposals rising every year, most of the University Research Board's administrative responsibilities were transferred to the newly created Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA), while the University Research Board retained all of its committee and advisory functions. The Board now operates as a branch of ORPA.
Consists of University Research Board meeting minutes, annual reports, correspondence between members, and some subject files, as well as the memos and correspondence of Raymond J. Woodrow, executive officer and secretary of the Committee on Project Research and Invention. Much of Woodrow's material pertains to University sponsored research in support of WWII efforts. This office is also known as the Office of Dean for Research.
For preservation reasons, original analog and digital media may not be read or played back in the reading room. Users may visually inspect physical media but may not remove it from its enclosure. All analog audiovisual media must be digitized to preservation-quality standards prior to use. Audiovisual digitization requests are processed by an approved third-party vendor. Please note, the transfer time required can be as little as several weeks to as long as several months and there may be financial costs associated with the process. Requests should be directed through the Ask Us Form.
Container list created by Suchi Mandavilli '14 and Eleanor Wright '14 in December 2011 and finding aid updated by Christie Peterson in February 2012. The contents of the former AC247, Committee on Project Research and Invention Records were integrated as Box 11 at that time.
An accrual of nine boxes of annual reports and board meeting minutes, AR.2021.031, was added to the records in September, 2021 by Phoebe Nobles.
