Abstract:

The Hardie family of Philadelphia originated from Scotland. This collection contains personal papers pertaining to several family members; however, the bulk of the records are from David Hardie, who was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1838, and later lived and worked in Philadelphia. David served in the United States Navy during the Civil War. His papers span from the 1850s to the 1880s and include personal correspondence; petitions; letters form the United States Treasury and Navy departments; and printed circulars, bills, and orders. The letters from the Navy Department, in particular, highlight David's appointments to various ships between 1862 and 1865. David died in 1889. Also among his papers is a 1889 petition from the New Jersey Surrogate's Office to Margaret A. Hardie, who may have been David's wife or sister.

The collection also contains a folder of personal papers and photographs pertaining to David's father, Robert Hardie, who was born in Philadelphia in 1798. Robert served on a privateer during the War of 1812. In 1820, he became a member of the Rising Star Lodge 126, Ancient York Masons. He was named a Master Mason in 1827. In 1831, he married Emily McClure, and the couple had two sons. Robert died in Baltimore, Maryland in 1881. Additionally, one folder contains a few papers pertaining to David's great-grandfather, Robert Hardie (1727-1795). Robert emigrated from Scotland to Bristol, Pennsylvania, in the 1740s. He later moved to Philadelphia's Southwark district. Robert married his second wife Martha Cowgill (or Cogill) in 1767 and the couple had one surviving son. Robert served as a captain in the Pennsylvania Navy during the Revolutionary War. A few other family members are highlighted though photographs and clippings. There are also booklets and reports cards from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital dating from 1896 to 1902.
