James Logan was born on 20 October 1674 in Lurgan, Ireland, to Patrick Logan and Isabella Hume. He was brought up in a Quaker family and received a classical education. In his early twenties, he set up a trade route between Dublin, Ireland, and Bristol, England. Around this time, in the 1690s, he became friends with William Penn who convinced Logan to travel with him to Pennsylvania as his secretary. Logan obliged, and they arrived at the port of Philadelphia in December 1699. For a short while, they lived in the same residence in Philadelphia until Penn traveled back to England in 1701. Shortly thereafter, Logan, who had not yet reached his thirties, was named an attorney to the Penn family and became a member of the Provincial Council, a position he held for over forty years. Two decades later, Logan was elected as the 16th mayor of Philadelphia. He later served as Pennsylvania’s chief justice (1731-1739) and governor (1736-1738).
Logan retired to Stenton following the end of his governorship. In this two-story home located in Germantown, Philadelphia (which still stands as a museum and tribute to the Logan family), Logan raised his family of four sons and three daughters with his wife, Sarah Read Logan. He died at Stenton on 31 October 1751.
One of James’s sons, William (1717-1776), took a special interest in caring for and preserving Stenton’s grounds. While William Logan followed in his father’s footsteps and also worked as an attorney for the Penn family, he devoted much of his life to agriculture, particularly in regards to Stenton, which he inherited after his father’s death. Covering several hundred acres in the mid-1700s, Stenton became a working farm under William’s guidance. Though he mostly lived in Philadelphia and used Stenton as a summer residence, at least one of his children with wife Hannah Emlen (1722-1777) was born there, George Logan (1753-1821). Like his father, William died at Stenton, in 1776.
As a young boy, George Logan was sent to England by his parents for his education. He would later return to England and Scotland to pursue a medical degree, which he received from the University of Edinburgh in 1779. A year later he returned to America and Stenton, which he had inherited from his father. At Stenton he and his wife, Deborah Norris (1761-1839), raised three sons: Albanus (1783-1854), Gustavus George (1786-1800), and Algernon Sydney (1791-1835). George also developed a keen interest in horticulture and improved Stenton’s grounds. His career veered into politics and he served several terms as a Pennsylvania representative in the 1780s and 1790s and senator from 1801 to 1807. Notably, in 1798 he helped prevent a war between France and the United States by personally visiting the country and talking with French officials. This resulted in passage of the “Logan Act,” which prohibited private citizens from interfering in foreign relations.
George’s wife, Deborah Norris Logan, while working as a mother to her sons and hostess to Stenton’s many visitors, became a well-known writer and historian but was largely self-educated. She attended Philadelphia’s Friends Girls School, went on to write a book about her husband’s life titled the Memoir of Dr. George Logan of Stenton, transcribed many of her family’s old letters, including letters between James Logan and William Penn, and kept her own diaries in which she reflected upon the social lives of many prominent Philadelphia families, as well as the city’s political, religious, and cultural developments.
The papers in this small collection from Philadephia's Logan family provides a general understanding of the family's activities. The collection was processed in the order found, and most of the papers in the folders are arranged chronologically. Exceptions to this are William Logan's business correspondence in Box 1, Folder 3, which is arranged alphabetically by author; and George Logan's papers (Box 1, Folder 11), which are arranged alphabtically by recipient, followed by miscellaneous documents.
Most of the collection documents William Logan's business interests, estate settlement, and horticultural practices. James Logan, Dr. George Logan, and Deborah Norris Logan are also represented but to a much lesser extent. Additionally, the collection contains a few letters from George and Deborah's children, as well as an undated complaint of Robert Quary against William Markham that is initialed by William Penn.

Deborah Norris Logan’s letters deal mainly with her children and close family members, their well-being, and updates to them about what was going on locally. The majority of the letters are addressed to two of her sons, Albanus and Algernon, and to her friend, Sarah Miller Walker.
In the vast majority of the letters, Logan discussed various illnesses and deaths of family members, friends, and neighbors, as well as weddings, marriages, and other news that involved people in her social circle. Logan was very well read and kept up with current events, as evidenced by her various mentions of affairs in Europe; among other topics she discussed Napoleon Bonaparte, Lord Nelson, and the British and French fleets. Other letters inlcude notes on astronomy, the Enlightenment, and the finding of a skeleton “near the river Plata” in South America. Logan also quoted Queen Elizabeth and Lord Byron on several occasions. As she grew older, however, the content of the letters became almost exclusively about illnesses and death. Logan notes her sadness, or the sadness of others, in many of these instances, where hope had been lost for a particular person.

This volume contains a mix of James Logan's and William Logan's letters. James Logan's letters mostly concern his business and commercial interests, while William Logan's papers focus entirely in gardening and horticulture.
