Daniel Smiley Jr. (1855-1930) was a member of the Haverford College Class of 1878. Following graduation, he was a teacher at William Penn Charter School until 1881, after which time he was the Clerk and Manager of Lake Mohonk House. He was President of the Everett Society from 1887-1888. Richard Mott Jones (1843-1917) was a member of the Haverford College Class of 1867. He was Headmaster of William Penn Charter School from 1875 until 1917. He married Annie Virginia Costello in 1873.
In this letter to Annie Costello Jones, Daniel Smiley Jr. discusses her husband Richard Mott Jones's health and his speech to the Haverford College Everett Society. In the first section of the letter, which is crossed out, Smiley discusses attempts by "Westtown sore heads" and "Western Prairie trotters" to destroy the Old Everett Society. He next discusses accompanying Jones to the doctor before returning to a description of Jones speaking up against "Westtown influence" at a recent meeting of the Everett Society. Smiley then describes Jones's kindness to him and discusses a possible trip to Germany that summer.
