Overview and metadata sections

Henry Wood (1849-1925) was born in New Bedford, Massachusettes to Henry Taber Wood and Anna Greene Russell. Wood graduated from Haverford College in 1869 before moving to Germany in 1875 and attending Leipzig University, where he recieved his Ph.D. in 1879. Upon moving back to the U.S., Wood became an associate professor of English at Johns Hopkins University before transitioning to the newly-formed German department. He became a Professor of German Studies in 1892 and retired nearly 30 years later in 1920. In 1902, Wood married the Baroness Clothilde von Kretschman and the couple had three children. Wood died in 1925 in Potsdam, Germany.

The collection contains a small envelope addressed to Henry Wood, a senior at Haverford College. The postmark, stamped in black ink above the address, shows that the envelope was recieved at the New Bedford, MA post office on September 30, 1868. Rather than a typical address line, the envelope features a poem in its place. Along with providing all of the necessary identifying details such as destination and recipient, the "poetic address" functions as an uplifting message, describing Wood as "doughty" for his persistence through his courses.
