Overview and metadata sections

The letter in this collection is addressed to Daniel B. Smith, an influential Quaker and Haverford Professor. Smith was the founder and president of the Loganian Society and served as the College's superintendent from 1843-1845. When Smith retired in 1846, Haverford College was facing significant financial troubles. Unable to enroll enough students to keep the school afloat, Haverford College shut down from 1846-1848.

This collection contains one letter to Daniel B. Smith from over a hundred former Haverford students. The letter was written in 1846 when Haverford College decided to shut down until further notice due to financial troubles. Many students took this occasion to express their gratitude to Smith through this letter. The letter is two pages long with three additional pages of student signatures.
