Robert Bowne Haines was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, on February 16, 1827, the son of Reuben Haines and Jane Bowne. He entered Haverford School in 1840 and graduated in 1844. A few years following graduation, Haines bought a nursery near Germantown. He married Margaret Vaux Wistar in 1852. He was a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and the Franklin Institute. Haines served on the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1870 to 1895. He died on August 9, 1895 in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania.
The collection contains calculations of the eclipse of the sun for May 1854 created by Robert Bowne Haines in 1844 as part of his coursework at Haverford School (now Haverford College).
