Henry Troth Coates was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 29, 1843, the son of George Morrison Coates and Anna Troth. He entered Haverford College in 1858, and graduated in 1862. During his time at Haverford he was the editor of The Bud and The Collegian. He was the vice president of the alumni association in 1881, a member of Phi Beta Kappa (1898), the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the University Archaeological Association of Philadelphia, and was the treasurer of the Zoological Society. He was also the editor of poetry books and a publisher and bookseller. He married Estelle Barton Lloyd in 1874. He died on January 22, 1910.

This collection contains two autograph albums created by Henry T. Coates, Haverford College Class of 1862. Volume 1 includes autographs of members of the Haverford College Class of 1862 along with a small portrait of them, their address, and the date that their information was recorded. The cover page for the volume reads "The Days of Auld Lang Syne at [Illustration of Founders Hall, Haverford College] Henry T. Coates." Volume 2 includes autographs from Haverford students and faculty members, mostly dating from 1857 to 1862. The album begins with signatures from faculty members and superintendents which are followed by student signatures organized by class year. There is a signature at the end of the volume from Allen C. Thomas dated 1865.

This collection is arranged in two volumes.

The Henry T. Coates autograph albums were donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in February, 1919 by William M. Coates.
