Lindley Haines was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1849, the son of Lindley Haines and Anne Lindset Sharp. He entered Haverford College in 1865, and left at the end of his freshman year. He was a member of the Board of Guardians of the Poor in Philadelphia between 1866 and 1890, and a member of the Common Council of Philadelphia from 1890 to 1981. He was a stock broker. He married Lillie L. Atlee in 1874.

This collection contains one volume with a collection of song lyrics gathered by Lindley Haines. The song lyrics are followed by the date and the name and hometown of the person who copied the lyrics into the volume. At the end of the volume there is an index with the names of the songs and the people who copied them.

The collection is arranged in one volume.

The Lindley Haines songbook was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College by Harold Haines Jr.
