Overview and metadata sections

Joseph Passmore Elkinton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 18, 1887, to Joseph Elkinton and Sara West Passmore. Growing up, Elkinton attended the Media Friends School and the Westtown School. Elkinton entered Haverford College in 1904, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1908. On October 5, 1909, he married Mary Russell Bucknell with whom he had three children: J. Russell, Rebecca, and David Cope. After Mary's death in 1929, he married Anna Bassett Griscom on November 5, 1931. In addition to working as the head of the Philadelphia Quartz Company, Elkinton served as the Secretary of People's Association of Delaware County from 1913 to 1916, was a Quaker Minister, served in World War I and II, was a member of the Friends World Committee for Consultation and the Japan Committee, helped found the All-American Friends Conference, and was a member of the Collecting Committee for Tunesassa. Elkinton officially retired from the Philadelphia Quartz Company in 1949, and passed on October 12, 1971, at the age of 84.

Volume 1 covers Elkinton's first semester at Haverford College, including his academic courses, social activities, religious questioning, and romantic inclinations. Volume 2 focuses on the second half of Elkinton's freshman year and first half of his sophomore year at Haverford. It contains information pertaining to his academic courses, social life, extracurricular activities, religious beliefs, and romantic questions. Volume 3 covers the second semester of Elkinton's sophomore year at Haverford and extends partway into the first semester of his junior year. Its contents include his academic courses, social life, extracurriculars, religious beliefs, life goals, and romantic questioning. Volume 4 covers the second semester of Elkinton's junior year and extends into the first semester of his senior year at Haverford. It contains information related to his academic courses, social life, extracurriculars, religious beliefs, life goals, and romantic questioning. Elkinton resolves his romantic dilemma and chooses his career in this volume. Volume 5 focuses on Elkinton's final semester at Haverford College. It relays information relating to his academics, extracurricular activities, senior thesis, health of his fiancee, and graduation. Since he only kept the diaries while at Haverford College, none of Elkinton's volumes cover his summer activities in great detail.
