Abstract:

John Bradway's scrapbook contains theater pamphlets, newspaper clippings, pictures, and other materials pertaining to his time as an undergraduate at Haverford College from 1907 to 1911, while working on his Master's degree in 1915, and in the Philadelphia area between and after these periods.

John Saeger Bradway was born in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1890, to William Bradway and Jennie Saeger. Bradway entered Haverford College in 1907, graduating in 1911. In 1914, he earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Bradway then returned to Haverford, earning a master's degree in 1915, for his thesis "Some Forerunners of the Opera." Bradway practiced law from 1914 to 1917, before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Reserves, serving from May 5, 1917, to March 17, 1919, and eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade). He married Mary Henderson on June 11, 1921. Bradway was a member of the Philadelphia Union League, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity, Order of Foreign Wars of the United States, American Legion, and served as the President of The Savoy Company in 1922. He served as the Chief Counsel of the Bureau of Legal Aid Society, Department of Public Welfare, and the Counsel of the National Association of Legal Aid Societies. Bradway was a Professor of Law at Duke University from 1931 to 1959, where he founded the Duke Legal Aid Clinic in 1931. He served as Professor of Law Emeritus at Duke University from 1959 to 1970, teaching as a Professor at California Western University and the Hastings College. Bradway died on January 2, 1985, in Eureka, California.

The scrapbook contains pamphlets from Haverford College and local theatrical productions from 1911-1915 including: "The Spinster Aunt", "Great Caesar", "Making a Poet", "The Big Match", "The Oxford Affair", "Bullywingle and Other Attractions" (manuscript included), "A Piece of Gossip in One Act", and "The Old Wive's Tale"; some are accompanied by pictures of the cast or the production. Additionally, it includes programs from the Haverford Musical Clubs, pictures of different buildings around Haverford College, chants and songs for Haverford's football team, a menu for the Freshman Banquet of 1908, Commencement Day programs for 1911 and 1915, a program for Haverford's 1933 Centenary, and letters from the Class of 1911 a decade after their graduation. Finally, it contains Bradway's 1910-1911 school report, an original play by him ("The Making of a Poet: A Musical Comedy"), and his Master's Thesis for Haverford College ("Some Forerunners of the Opera").
