Abstract:

This photograph album follows David Cope Elkinton's junior year abroad as he travelled with a group of friends through pre-WWII Europe and the Mediterranean. The album covers the years 1934 and 1935, though the album is non-chronological and omits large periods of time.

David Cope Elkinton (1915-2003) was the youngest child of Joseph Passmore Elkinton and Mary Bucknell Elkinton, born January 25, 1915. He graduated from Westtown School and attended Haverford College. At Haverford College, Elkinton was a member of the Liberal Club and the Debating Team. He graduated in 1936, with a degree in German.

After graduation, Elkinton became an accountant and cost analyst with the family firm, Philadelphia Quartz Company, and a Quaker activist. In 1940, he married Marian Dunham (1913-2010), and they had three sons: Thomas Dunham, David Passmore, and Steven. He was a lifelong member of Media Monthly Meeting and participated in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Friends General Conference, and Friends World Committee. In later life, particular interests were genealogy, travel, American Youth Hostel, Inc., and the Media-Providence Friends School. In 1989, the Elkintons moved to White Horse Village, a retirement community in Gradyville. David C. Elkinton died July 2, 2003.

The scrapbook and photographs belonged to David C. Elkinton. He is referred to in the photos as DCE.

The album covers the years 1934 and 1935, though the albums skips around and omits large periods of time. It begins with images from the cruise, the S.S. Saturnia in August of 1934, and progresses to Italy, focussing on Pompeii, the Amalfi coast, and Sicily. There are a few pictures of the Parthenon in Greece, but not much time spent there otherwise. The pictures continue into Germany and then Algeria, where the focus shifts to skiing and landscape shots. The rest of the images focus on Austria and Prague, especially on their mountainous regions. The collection also includes miscellaneous photographs that cover all of the stops of the trip.

The David Cope Elkinton photograph album is arranged into three folders. The first folder contains the photography album. The second and third folders contain loose materials that were placed at the back of the album in no identified order.
