Overview and metadata sections

Stevenson Whitcomb Fletcher Jr. (1910-1996) was born in Blacksburg, Virginia, to Stevenson Whitcomb Fletcher Sr. and Margaret Rolston. Fletcher Sr. worked as a professor in the horticulture department of Pennsylvania State University, possibly influencing his son's interest in horticulture. Fletcher Jr. became a member of the Haverford College Arboretum Association and served as its director for a number of years. His sketches were used in many of the arboretum's newsletters, often identifying the abundance of unique plant species found on Haverford's campus. He died on September 22, 1996.

This collection includes a number of sketches done by Fletcher depicting scenes on the Haverford campus. Many of the sketches are releated to the arboretum, as they identify unique and interesting tree and plant species. Typically, the sketches are labeled with the species name (and occasionally scientific name) as well as an identifier for the building it is closest to. Though most of the sketches were done on tracing paper, some include copies made on printer paper. Also included is a scale of reduction for the sketches, along with a correspondence regarding the inclusion of Fletcher's sketches in various Haverford newsletters.

Materials are arranged chronologically, beginning with correspondence and ending with sketches.

These materials were transferred to the College Archives by Martha Van Artsdalen, the Plant Curator at Haverford College, in 2018.
