Overview and metadata sections
Jonathan Richards (1812-1882) was born in Chester, Pennsylvania to Davis and Abigail Richards. He was educated at Westtown School, located in West Chester, PA. He married Margaret Caley. From 1853 to 1857, Richards acted as the principal/superintendent of Haverford College. From 1870 to 1876, Richards acted as an Indian Agent in Wichita, Kansas, for the Wichita and affiliated tribes. After leaving Kansas, Richards and his wife returned to Pennsylvania, where they lived at the Pennsylvania Hospital. Richards was a member and elder of Western District Monthly Meeting. He died on March 3, 1882, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This collection contains four letters addressed to various parties, dated between 1854 and 1856. The letters are all authored by Jonathan Richards, and concern many of his responsibilities as the superintendent of Haverford College. In the first letter, Richards suggests that the Board of Managers revise the suspension/expulsion policy as he believes it is lenient and allows for students to take advantage of the long process. The second letter discusses a recent event in which a certain group of students cut holes into both the water tank and waste tank; one student was expelled. The third letter concerns a possible vacation for Richards and his wife, while the fourth deals with a potential candidate for a teaching role at Haverford, recommended to Richards by a friend.
