Overview and metadata sections
Elihu Grant (1873-1942) was a biblical scholar and writer on Palestine. He received his bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degree from Boston University. He was the superintendent of the American Friends Schools in Ramallah and Jerusalem from 1901 to 1904. After his return to the United States, he was a professor of biblical literature at Smith College. Grant became a professor at Haverford College in 1917 and taught there until his retirement in 1938. During his tenure at Haverford, Grant directed four archaeological excavations at Beth Shemesh. He wrote extensively about the excavations as well as about the people of Palestine.
This collection contains photographs, correspondence, clippings, and manuscript materials pertaining to Elihu Grant's expeditions in the Middle East. The collection includes a handwritten draft and page proofs of an article by Grant on Ramallah, Palestine as well as clippings related to his archaeological expeditions. There are five letters to Grant from W.F. Albright, A. Edward Kelsey, C.C. McCown and J.H. Ovenden on archaeological topics. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs and negatives of Palestine, Pompeii, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and other locations in the Middle East.
Photographs are arranged based on Grant's organization of prints and negatives into various envelopes.
