Overview and metadata sections
The Haverford College Emergency Unit was formed after the U.S. entered World War I in the spring of 1917. It was primarily focused on training students and faculty for the possibility of overseas deployment. The Unit was supervised under Dr. James Babbitt and included physical conditioning, auto mechanics, manual training, camping, first aid and hiking. Classes continued, however, their sessions were moved to the mornings to accommodate the aforementioned training schedule. In May of 1917, 30 members of the Unit left the College, 19 for hospital work and 11 for further army training. The Emergency Unit disbanded shortly thereafter, with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) using the campus to train in the following months.
This collection contains documents relating to the Haverford College Emergency Unit, formed during World War I. The materials include forms to be completed by possible enlistees regarding their physical condition and skills they may have. Meeting minutes and bulletins are also present, which comment on the daily training of prospective members of the Emergency Unit. The question of whether seniors leaving for Europe will receive a diploma was raised. The final document is a newspaper clipping which contains an article titled "Friends' Unit Hopes Soon to be in France."
