Overview and metadata sections
John A. Silver (1903-1991) was educated at the Jacob Tome School for Boys, before enrolling at Haverford College in 1921. Silver was a member of both the football and cricket teams and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1925. He was employed by the F.J. Stokes Machine Company, and aided in the development of "tablet-making presses," used for products such as Lifesaver Mints, oilless bearings, magnets and tool bits. Silver served as a member of the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1935 until his death in 1991. He also co-founded the Haverford Campus Arboretum Association, giving funds for the construction of a greenhouse (now bearing his name). He died on March 29, 1991.
This collection contains a memorial minute, correspondences and related materials of John A. Silver. Many of the documents have to do with the Haverford College Arboretum, to which Silver donated funds, and Silver's recommendations on the financial situation at Haverford College through much of the 1970s and 1980s. Materials on admissions and aid as well as a general history of the college are also included in this collection, with both containing writings by Silver. All of the documents (besides the memorial) were contained in a three-ring binder, separated into subsections by labeled dividers, which remain in place.
Materials are arranged within subsections using original headings from binder
