Abstract:

This typescript by Lois V. Stanton entitled "Tales of a Haverford R and R Girl" describes the author's experiences training to perform relief work at Haverford following World War II and travelling to Europe with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) between 1945 and 1947.

Lois Virginia Stanton (née Plumb) was born in New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1922. She graduated from Wilson College with a bachelor's in Foreign Languages in 1943, before pursuing her master's in Relief and Rehabilitation at Haverford College, becoming one of the school's first female students. Following the completion of her studies, Stanton traveled to France and Germany with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). While in Europe, she met her husband, William Macy Stanton, Jr., who also worked for the AFSC. The pair married in 1947. Lois V. Stanton served as the director of Quaker transport in Paris for the AFSC and then transferred to Darmstadt, Germany, where she and her new husband worked at the Neighborhood Center established by the AFSC.

Upon returning to the United States, Stanton lived on several college campuses where her husband served as an administrator, ultimately settling in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, in 1957. While raising children, she continued her aid-based interests, working part-time and as a volunteer with no fewer than 13 organizations, including the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. In 1966, she began a 25-year career with the Department of Public Assistance for Delaware County, Pennsylvania, fighting against stigmatization of welfare recipients. In 1992, she self-published this collection of letters and other writings about her experiences at Haverford and with the AFSC. Lois V. Stanton died in 2016.
