Overview and metadata sections
The Haverford College Founders Club was a social club formed "for leaders in scholarship and college activities." Its goal was to form a tighter bond between current Haverford students and alumni. The ability to "do a few things well" was explicitly prioritized over the ability to do "many things in a mediocre manner." This philosophy manifested itself in the club's qualifications which focused on members of the Haverford community who were leaders or in other top positions of their given sport or activity. The club hosted meetings and dinners throughout the year, including a reception dinner for newly-arrived freshmen.
This collection contains two constitutions from the Founders Club of Haverford College. The first, dated 1914, outlines the qualifications for admittance into the club, which includes academic and extracurricular excellence. It concludes by outlining the various positions in leadership of the club, most of which are decided via elections. The second constitution, dated 1948, provides updates to the original in the form of a new "Committee on Membership," formed in order to ensure that qualifications to the club would not become too strict or relaxed. Much of the wording in the second constitution is taken directly from the first, with entire sentences lifted verbatim. Notably, the second constitution lacks a table outlining which extracurricular activities count towards admittance.
