Overview and metadata sections
Eighth Dimension (8D) is the community service organization of Haverford College. It was founded in 1978 by students, staff, and faculty to integrate experiential learning into the College's curriculum. Deriving from a belief in the importance of public service and the heritage of Quaker activism, the name refers to the fact that the founders considered service as equal to the other "seven dimensions" of the College's curriculum. Eighth Dimension is largely student-run, and works to engage students with the Philadelphia area beyond Haverford's campus.
The collection includes minutes of meetings, correspondence related to Eighth Dimension activities, and many flyers and other ephemera advertising events and volunteer opportunities. Brochures, guides, and website materials include lists of organizations 8D works with and information for students running programs. Student work day materials document volunteer opportunities during first-year orientation. Housing Outreach and Action Program (HOAP) documents trips made by Haverford students, usually over spring break, to work with Habitat for Humanity on building houses. The Names Project materials document efforts to bring the AIDS quilt to Haverford and its reception on campus. Photographs document a variety of projects, and many are unidentified.
Materials in the collection are organized by document type. Several binders of historical materials were preserved in their original order.
