Overview and metadata sections
The Thomas Wistar Brown Graduate School was established in 1917 after the donation of nearly $400,000 by Thomas Wistar Brown, a donor and Haverford College manager from 1853 to 1916. In 1918, the graduate school opened its doors to women, becoming the first part of Haverford to do so. The program primarily focused on masters in biblical literature, philosophy, sociology and history. Students had access to many of the facilities of Haverford College including the library. Housing was segregated by gender, with the women housed in Merion Hall and the men in Graduate House (now referred to as Cadbury House). By 1926, however, the program was deemed too costly to keep in operation and it was closed. Many believe that the cost of separate men's and women's housing was partially to blame for the program's inability to generate a profit.
This collection contains three informational guides regarding the Thomas Wistar Brown Graduate School. They date from 1920 to 1926 and give a general overview and short history of the graduate school, before providing course descriptions and lists of those enrolled. Though the school operated on the Haverford campus, there are very few registered students who obtained their bachelor's degree from Haverford; instead, most of the students came from other colleges associated with the Religious Society of Friends including University of Pennsylvania, Earlham, Juniata and Guilford colleges.
