Overview and metadata sections

Joseph A. Meyer (1856–1894) was a Massachusetts Institute of Technology architecture graduate who accompanied John Henry Haynes on the Nippur expedition in order to make archaeological sketches. Haynes and Meyer met in Baghdad in the summer of 1894, at the end of Meyer's MIT sponsored tour to practice his architectural drawing. Meyer died of dysentery less than six months into the excavation.

This journal and sketchbook covers the dates May 28 to July 19, 1894. The journal relates daily life at the excavation site in Nippur, Iraq, including work done and materials found, and includes numerous sketches of scenery, architecture, and materials found.

Single bound volume, organized chronologically.

The Excavation in Niffer [Nippur] notebook was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1980 by Sidney Hunt.
