Abstract:

Manuscript commonplace book by John Josselyn, dealing mostly with religious subjects.

John Josselyn was an Englishman who traveled twice to New England, writing New England's Rarities, discovered in Birds, Beasts, Fishes, Serpents, and Plants of that Country (1671), and An Account of the Voyages to New England (1674). These books are well-known for their information on the flora and fauna of New England. Little is known about Josselyn beyond these publications.

Signed John Josselyn and dated 1692 on the flyleaf, although in a different ink than the interior. Topics include "Of the Trinity," "Death," "Sinne," "Rules for the Good Life," and other religious topics. Some headings appear to be authors, rather than topics. There are also lists of words and some words and definitions. There are also small illustrations throughout.

The first part of the book is mostly clean manuscript, while the second half includes more crossed-out passages. The whole volume was bound in the 20th century in library buckram, but the front part of the wrapper remains as part of the binding.
