Overview and metadata sections

The members of the Ogden family represented here include David Aaron (1770-1829), Thomas Ludlow (1773-1844), and Gouverneur (1778-1851). All three attended Columbia University and studied law. The Ogden Land Company was created by the three brothers. They bought land in New York State from Native nations in the nineteenth century and sold them to white Americans. The brothers are also known for their legal counsel on the Holland Land Company, which belonged to European investors who recruited Americans to manage the company due to laws regarding European ownership of U.S. land. "Holland Land Company." Wikipedia, April 24, 2018. Ogden Family Papers, William L. Clements Library, The University of Michigan

These papers consist of letters between members of the Ogden family and outside correspondents from 1818-1860. Some of the letters are addressed to an unknown party from David A. Ogden and discuss business and matters of the Holland Land company and dealings with Native Americans. There are similar letters addressed to David A. Ogden from Paul Busti. Letters regarding family matters are addressed to Mrs. Isaac Ogden and do not have a clear sender, although they may be from "W. M. M. Ogden."

Letters are arranged by date.
