Overview and metadata sections
Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting was established in 1933 as a united meeting by Abington Quarterly Meeting (Orthodox) and Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting (Hicksite). The meeting became a part of Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting in 1955. Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting remains an active meeting today.
The Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting Meetinghouse Campaign was launched in 2010 with the goal of funding the construction of a new Meetinghouse for the community. The campaign raised the over $6 million necessary to finance the purchase of a new plot of land, the construction, and the inclusion of a Skyscape by contemporary Quaker artist, James Turrell. The new Meetinghouse opened in 2014, and remains an active meetinghouse.
James Turrell was born in 1943, in Los Angeles, California, to two Quaker parents. He recieved a bachelor's in perceptual psychology from Pomona College in 1965, before transitioning his studies to the fine arts and recieving a master's in art from Claremont Graduate University. He has produced work in multiple media since the mid 1960's, focusing on the concepts of light and space. He has received numerous awards in the arts including The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1984, and the National Medal of Arts in 2013.
This collection contains the administrative and fundraising records of the Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting Meetinghouse Campaign, all compiled between the years of 1999 and 2014. The collection also includes materials published on the artist James Turrell, examples of his artwork for sale, and correspondance with the artist himself.
