Abstract:

The collection is a compilation of materials by William H.S. Wood (1840-1907) toward the writing of a book on Quakers and the Civil War, including information from John B. Crenshaw (1820-1889) and Francis T. King (1819-1891).

William H.S. Wood (1840-1907) was the author of "Friends of the City of New York in the Nineteenth Century," (1904) which was the printed version of an address delivered in the meeting house of the Religious Society of Friends on 20th Street (Gramercy Park) New York, on Thursday evening, April 24, 1902. He was a member of the Haverford College class of 1859.

John B. Crenshaw (1820-1889), a Quaker, matriculated at Haverford College in 1837. From 1838-1844, he managed a mill near Richmond, Virginia. The son of Nathaniel C. and Deborah Darby Crenshaw, he first married Rachel Hoge, and then Judith Ann Willitts. In 1854, Crenshaw was recommended as a minister. He took a leading part in helping young Friends who had been drafted. He nursed the sick of both northern and southern armies in the Civil War, and was instrumental in bringing Virginia back into the Union. In 1869, he was elected a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He opened an orphanage for African American children. He was an editor of The Southern Friend.

Francis T. King (1819-1891), a Quaker, matriculated at Haverford College in 1834. He served as clerk of Baltimore Yearly Meeeting from 1856-1885. He assisted John Hopkins in establishing the hospital. In 1863, he visited Point Lookout (Maryland) to inspect conditions of 11,000 Confederate prisoners. King was the first president of the Board of Trustees of Bryn Mawr College. Throughout the course of his life, he was connected with 28 public, educational, or charitable institutions.

The collection contains material compiled by William Henry Sutton Wood for a proposed book on "Friends and the Civil War." It contains letters to William H. S. Wood; extracts from the diary of John B. Crenshaw; reminiscences of Francis T. King; accounts of young Friends who were drafted for military service; and extracts from the minutes of the Meetings for Sufferings of eight Yearly Meetings.
