Overview and metadata sections

The German Associated Nationality Group was a committee of the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross that led a fundraising effort within the German-American community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, as part of the Red Cross War Fund campaign. Also referred to as the German-American Committee, and, at one point (in 1945), as the German American Nationalties Group, this committee coordinated and promoted Red Cross fundraising efforts among German-American organizations in Philadelphia. It met in the hall of the German Society of Pennsylvania, and was chaired by Eugene A. Stopper, who was at the time the president of the Society. The other officers of the German Nationality Group were Gustave W. Dickel, treasurer; and (Mrs.) E. Hagen Lawrence, secretary.

This collection contains the records of the German Associated Nationality Group, a committee of the Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the American Red Cross that led a fundraising effort within the German-American community in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, as part of the Red Cross War Fund campaign. Included are minutes of meetings (12 March to 12 May 1943); invitation letters to meetings (July 1943 to April 1944); two appeal letters (1944, 1945), including related Red Cross campaign ephemera; committee membership lists; lists of donors and donations; and two clippings from German-language newspapers. The records appear to have been kept by the secretary of the group, E. Hagen Lawrence, who took the minutes; her name is sometimes given in the form: Mrs. E. H. Lawrence.

The collection comprises 5 folders stored in GAC Mss. IIb (Legal-size folders), Box 1.

Some materials found together with the present records concern the German Society of Pennsylvania's Committee on the War Effort, and are being considered separately, as part of the Society's records.
