Baseball, although one of the oldest team’s sports played at Drexel, along with Basketball and Football, was not officially supported by the University until the 1924 team coached by Harry O’Brien. During the team’s early years, it would develop long-standing rivalries with the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford (both 1924), Delaware, Ursinus, St. Joseph’s (1925), Swarthmore (1926), Lehigh (1927) and Widener (1928). In 1943, because of World War II, the baseball team, like other school sports, would suspend operation for that year. The baseball team returned the following year, and continue until the university suddenly terminated the sport in 2003. During that time, it was originally a member of the Middle Atlantic Conference, later named the East Coast Conference, until 1992, when it joined the North Atlantic Conference. Within a year of joining the NAC, Drexel’s baseball squad would put together a ‘winning’ season, entering the Conference Tournament both that year (1993) and the following season (1994), eventually reaching the semifinals. Baseball returned to Drexel in the fall of 2006, as a club sport.
The collection contains three boxes of records related to Drexel’s baseball team that were created between 1944 and 1995. The collection is arranged by year and includes newspaper clippings, statistics, photographs, letters, media guides, official scorebooks and yearbooks.
The first box in the collection contains both original and photocopied newspaper clippings from local newspapers which covers the team between the years 1951 and 1988. The box also contains statistics which were created by Drexel University, media guides and two copies of the 1995 yearbook.
The second box in the collection contains mainly letters and statistics that were created between 1944 and 1974. The box also contains some photographs, negatives of photographs, newspaper clippings, and two official scorebooks for the same period.
The third and final box in the collection contains newspaper clippings, statistics from both Drexel and the East Coast Conference, media guides, press releases, and photographs covering the years 1975-1988.
