Overview and metadata sections
Student government at Drexel began in 1905 with the formation of an Advisory Committee that consisted of nineteen teachers, all appointed, sixteen students, all elected from their individual departments, and two alumni. The Advisory Committee was formed to encourage the various student groups to extend their allegiance and loyalty beyond departmental limits to include the Institute as a whole by giving the students some control over their own affairs. In 1912, Men's Student Government was formed, followed shortly by one for Women's. In 1918, both a Men's and a Women's Student Council were formed. The two councils, after being suggested several times in the 1950s, merged together in 1959 to form the Student Government of Drexel Institute (now the Undergraduate Student Government Association). At the time of the merger, the government was made up of eighteen men and nine women. Based on its new 1959 Constitution the government consisted of a President, a First and Second Vice President, a Treasurer, a Corresponding Secretary and a Recording Secretary. That constitution has been modified several times since the merger, most recently in 2005, with the government now consisting of two executive officers, a President and a Vice President, a Treasurer, an Archivist, an Events Director, a Personnel Director, a Public Relations Director, a Street Team Director and a Technology Director.
