Overview and metadata sections
Bohdan Taras Hnatiuk was a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics from 1960 until 1995. He was born in the Ukraine in 1915; earned his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University in Danzig, Germany, in 1945; and emigrated to the U.S. in 1949. Before coming to Drexel he taught at the University of Notre Dame from 1951 to 1957 and at West Virginia University from 1957 to 1960. His area of expertise was aeronautical engineering; he conducted research with NASA from 1967 to 1979 and was awarded the forty-year service award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1993. Dr. Hnatiuk died in 1998.
This collection consists of Dr. Hnatiuk's research notes, manuscripts, publications, lecture notes, and presentations. Some correspondence and a few brochures from the mechanical engineering department are present among Dr. Hnatiuk's personal papers as well.
The first four boxes in the collection contain materials from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics that Dr. Hnatiuk received during his years as a professor at Drexel. These include a commencement program, faxes, letters, e-mails, interoffice correspondence and memos, booklets on senior projects, several proposals for senior projects and faculty meetings minutes.
The next four boxes contain teaching related materials. These include lecture notes for his courses, such as Gas Turbine and Jet Propulsion and Gas Turbines (G667), student grades, class lists, course outlines for Thermal Systems Design (E660), Heat Transfer (E619) and Thermal System Analysis (MEM 440), homework and exam, transparency film and several student papers.
The final two boxes contain materials that Dr. Hnatiuk used for research in both his teaching and publishing. These include photographs, transparencies, brochures, cutaways, research studies, blueprints, newsletters, a newspaper article, and two copies of his Theoretical Analysis of Boundary Layer Separation Phenomena Ahead of a Secondary Injection into a Supersonic Main Stream.
The collection also includes a 16mm reel film, "Channel flow of a compressible fluid."
