Overview and metadata sections

Women In Nephrology was founded in 1983 by medical professionals Dr. Nancy Gary, Dr. Lois Katz, Dr. Sandra Levison, and Dr. Mabel Purkerson. As a professional organization, WIN's mission was to offer professional development and leadership mentoring to women nephrologists. WIN is also dedicated to increasing the visibility and representation of women in the field of nephrology and advocating for nephrological research relevant to women's health. Its work has often taken the form of professional development seminars, networking events, or scientific symposia, usually held in an official or unofficial capacity with other nephrological organizations like the American Society of Nephrologists and the National Kidney Foundation. WIN now offers professional guidance to both men and women.

The Women In Nephrology records is a loose collection of records held by the organization Women In Nephrology (WIN) from 1987-2006. The collection offers researchers insight into how WIN offered career development to women professionals in the field of nephrology while working to increase gender parity and presence in the field overall.

It is divided into five series:

SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE (1989-2003)

The bulk of the collection contains some of the correspondence records from past WIN presidents: Sandra Levinson, MD (1990-1992), Josie Briggs, MD (1992-1994), Ulla Kopp, MD (1994-1996), Chris K. Abrass, MD (1996-1998), Susan Bagby, MD (1998-2000) and Kathryn Sandberg, PhD (2002-2004). There is also official WIN organizational correspondence as well as from WIN's executive council.

SERIES 2: EVENTS (1990-2006)

Documents relating to the planning of industry events in the field of nephrology including the American Society of Nephrology annual conference, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) annual conference, and annual WIN events held in conjunction with ASN and NKF's conferences.

SERIES 3: GOVERNANCE DOCUMENTS (1988-2000)

Internal administration and governance documents of the organization that focus on issues related to the writing and revising of bylaws, notes from WIN's executive council, financial considerations, fundraising, and prospective nominations to WIN's board.

SERIES 4: MEMBERSHIP DOCUMENTS (1988-2003)

The other significant portion of the collection is comprised of membership forms containing information of WIN members. The information gathered in these forms is limited to names, locations, and areas of career specialty. Some of the forms contain photocopied checks and have been restricted.

There is also some broad member information, mainly member directories along with a file related to the creation of a database of members that could be used as a referral system.

SERIES 5: PUBLICATIONS (1995-2002)

WIN publications including blank letterhead and a sizable amount of newsletters.

There is also a sole file entitled "Task Forces & Committees" (1990-2002) that features a sparse amount of documentation related to the work of various sub-groups in WIN on specific issues in the professional field of nephrology.
