Overview and metadata sections

The Pathological Society of Philadelphia was organized in Philadelphia by Samuel D. Gross and other notable physicians, including R. LaRoche, Addinell Hewson, and S. Weir Mitchell, on 29 September 1857. It was formed to promote the study of pathology through the exhibition and discussion of specimens. This is currently [1991] an active organization.

The officers of the Pathological Society of Philadelphia included a president, vice president, secretary, recorder, treasurer, and curator. There were also several standing committees, such as committees on publication and morbid growths. Most of the meetings of the society were held at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The categories of membership of the society were: resident, non resident, corresponding, and life. Although its scientific sessions were open to visitors, only society members could attend the private sessions where business was transacted.

The volumes contain the minutes and proceedings of the Pathological Society of Philadelphia, maintained by the Secretary, from the society's formation 29 September 1857 to 14 October 1869 and 23 April 1887 to 27 June 1901. Included are descriptions of specimens displayed to the society, membership propositions, committee reports, discussions, annual reports of the treasurer, and records of "private sessions", meetings in which the official administrative business of the society was conducted.

These minute books were donated to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by the Pathological Society of Philadelphia in 1902.

The volumes were recatalogued in 1991.
