Abstract:
The Publications collection ranges in date from 1910 to circa 2012 and consists of brochures and pamphlets, calendars, newsletters, and directories published by the College of Physicians, as well as several brief histories of the College written by former Fellows. Of note are short-lived staff newletters, dating from 1988 to 1995; the Fellows Forum, a monthly newletter produced for Fellows of the College from 1974-2006, and eventually replaced with monthly email updates in 2006 (printed); and Fugitive Leaves, a library newletter published in 3 series: the first from 1935-1938, the second from 1956-1969, and the third from 1986-1996. Currently (as of 2017), monthly email updates are still sent by the Office of Advancement to staff and Fellows, and the Library publishes a monthly/twice-monthly blog entitled Fugitive Leaves, which was started in October 2015. Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary, 1875-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. As of 2018, the Office of the Secretary is still active; however, these records are now documented through the Executive Office. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of the Secretary span the years 1875 to 1988; however, there are gaps in represented years. This collection consists mainly of memos, correspondence, flyers related to lectures and other special events held at and sponsored by the College.

Abstract:
This collection contains a small amount of Robert Campbell's correspondence, 1978-1980, from his tenure as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Robert E. Campbell was born in 1931. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1957 and specialized in diagnostic radiology. In 1975, Campbell was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and served as its President from 2006 to 2008.

Records of the Committee on the Centennial Celebration, 1886-1887; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on the Centennial Celebration was established 1 October 1884 and held its first meeting on 3 January 1885. The Committee's task was to "consider and report upon an appropriate plan to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the College in 1887." It held sixteen meetings in total, ande made the following recommendations: 1) To form a collection of portraits of past Fellows to be exhibited during the celebration; 2) That the celebration should be held January 3 and 4, 1887, including an address by the President, a reception, a special meeting for conferring diplomas on Associate Fellows, and a dinner at the Union League; and 3) Invitations should be sent to all Fellows of the College as well as presidents of other medical societies, including the Medical Society of Pennsylvania and the American Medical Association. Abstract:
The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Abstract:
In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. Records of the Committee on Fellowship II, 1873-1892; 1918-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Records of the Committee on Fellowship span the years 1983 to 1892, although the bulk of the material dates from 1974 to 1978. Included in the collection are three volumes of list of Fellows and deceased Fellows, dating from 1973 to 1892, and 1918 to 1979. Correspondence and reports from meetings and regarding the status are Fellows date from 1949 to 1978. The Committee on Fellowship became a standing Committee of the College of Physicians in 1972. The by-laws of this year state that the Committee on Fellowship "shall seek candidates for Fellowship and help process their nominations" and "investigate every candidate for Fellowship thoroughly".

Records of the Section on Dermatology, 1986-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Section on Dermatology was established by Lawrence Parish and Joseph Witkowski on December 22, 1981. The requirements for membership were "a professional interest in and a respect for dermatology." The Section held four or five meetings a year on Wednesday evenings; these meetings generally included a lecture followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Dermatology. The Records of the Section on Dermatology span the years 1986 to 2001 and consist mainly of correspondence. General correspondence (1986 to 1997) files contain a brief history of the Section, thank-you notes for monetary donations, correspondence with speakers, and some membership lists, but focus mainly on the financial situation of the Section. Abstract:
The Section on Medical Ethics was officially established on June 26, 1994. Originally called the Section on Bioethics, it was reorganized in late 1996 as the Section on Medical Ethics to better reflect its purposes: To promote understanding of [biomedical] medical ethics issues among healthcare professionals and the general public; to promote educational programs for healthcare professionals and the community; to promote research and scholarship in the field of medical ethics [bioethics] and the history of medical issues; and to faciliate consensus in matters of medical ethis [bioethcis] and policy. The Section hosted lectures and other programming at the College. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Medical Ethics.
