Jesse Elmer Shuman, Bloomsburg, Pa., physician and surgeon, was born on 30 July 1869. He received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1891. For most of his career, Shuman was associated with Bloomsburg Hospital. He was a president of the Columbia County Medical Society and a member of the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and American Medical Association. Jesse Elmer Shuman died in 1950 or 1951, at the age of 81, of complication developed after a fall.
This small collection, 1885-1935, documents Jesse Elmer Shuman's medical education at the University of Pennsylvania and the Medical Institute of Philadelphia and includes matriculation and lecture admission tickets, lecture schedules, examination questions, and a recipe book. Also included are some newsclippings, a volume of notes used from 1912-1931, for lectures on materia medica, and an undated typescript address on angina pectoris.
The bulk of this collection of Jesse Elmer Shuman material was donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Ellen and Mrs. R. S. Burr in 1979. Additional material concering Shuman's attendance at the Medical Institute of Philadelphia was donated by Ellen Burr in 1982.
The collection was processed and catalogued in 1992.
