Overview and metadata sections

Edward Armin Schumann, Philadelphia gynecologist, was born on 9 July 1879. He married Hazel Prince in 1910 and had three sons, including physician Francis Schumann. Edward A. Schumann died on 18 October 1970.

After receiving an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1901, Edward A. Schumann practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Philadelphia until his death. He was Gynecologist to Philadelphia General Hospital, 1916-1944, Obstetrician to Chestnut Hill Hospital, 1919-1970, and Surgeon in Chief at the Kensington Hospital for Women, 19311944. He was also pathologist at the Gynecean Hospital. In 1929, Schumann joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania and became Professor of Obstetrics in 1933. He became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in 1921. In 1945, Edward A. Schumann was president of the American Gynecological Society.

This small collection of letters, pathological specimen registers, speeches and writings, and miscellaneous material, 1903-1963, documents the career and obstetric and gynecological practice of Edward A. Schumann.

Series 1 contains three folders of letters, 1916-1958, from, primarily, obstetricians and gynecologists. The letters concern Schumann's speaking engagements; his presidency of the American Gynecological Society; his appointment as professor of gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine; publication of Schumann's A textbook of obstetrics (1936); and personal matters. The series includes one letter from Martha Gellhorn.

Three registers of pathological specimens from the Gynecean Hospital, 1903-1907, are in Series 2. Indices to specimen numbers are included. Most entries contain detailed descriptions, drawings of the specimens, and notes on the history of the case. Edward A. Schumann was Pathologist at the Gynecean Hospital during this period.

A collection of Schumann's typescript speeches and writings, primarily unpublished, 1921-1955, is in Series 3. Manyjitems concern topics in obstetrics or gynecology or the profession of a gynecologist. The series also includes several addresses to graduating classes of nurses; biographical memoirs of George Gellhorn and John A. McGlinn; and Schumann's history of the Woman's Hospital in the State of New York.

Series 4 contains miscellaneous material, 1936-1963, including a photographic print of Edward A. Schumann; programs from meetings of the American Gynecological Society; Schumann's research on the history of obstetrics, particularly Francois Mauriceau, Hugh Chamberlen, and the Hotel Dieu; and material from the 50th anniversary meeting of the American Gynecological Club, including a photographic print, and membership roster, minutes, program, and Houston S. Everett's typescript history of the organization.

The Edward A. Schumann papers were donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Francis Schumann of Machias, Me., on 22 January 1993. The collection was processed and catalogued in March 1993.

During processing, one folder and two volumes of Schumann's reprints; a photographic print of Milton L. McCall; and copies of the Philadelphia County Medical Society's Maternal mortality in Philadelphia 1931-1933 and volume 48, no. 8, of The medical record of the Berks County Medical Society were removed for individual cataloguing.
