Overview and metadata sections
Ludwig Loeb, Philadelphia physician, was born in Ungstein, Germany, on 8 April 1866. He married Agnes Stern in 1900; they had two children, David Stern Loeb and Sophie L. Siegel. Loeb died in Pennsylvania Hospital on 4 May 1957.
Loeb received an M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1890. He practiced medicine in Philadelphia. Loeb served as chief obstetrician and medical director of the Jewish Maternity Hospital in Philadelphia and attending physician and medical chief of the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia and was a co founder of the American Hospital for the Diseases of the Stomach in 1905 and a co founder, in 1914, and medical director of the National Stomach Hospital. Loeb was also an instructor in surgery at the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania.
Loeb was a member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Northern Medical Association, and the Gastroenterological Society.
This small collection documenting Ludwig Loeb's medical education in 1890 contains his M.D. diploma from Jefferson Medical College, a certificate of attendance in an anatomy course at the Philadelphia School of Anatomy and Surgery, and a certificate of attendance in a course of practical obstetrics at the Philadelphia Lying in Charity.
The three Ludwig Loeb documents were donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Sophie L. Siegel, daughter of Ludwig Loeb, on 28 August 1981.
The collection was catalogued in 1991.
