Overview and metadata sections

Robert Waldo Abbe, New York surgeon, was born on 13 April, 1851. He married Catherine Amory Palmer in 1891. Abbe died of anemia, probably related to his work with radium, on 7 March 1928.

Abbe received an A.B. from the College of the City of New York in 1870 and an M.D. from the College of Physicians and surgeons in New York in 1874. He then served an internship at St. Luke's Hospital, New York.

From 1877 to 1884, Abbe was Attending Surgeon in the outpatient Department of New York Hospital. He was also surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital and the Cancer Hospital and Attending Surgeon at New York Babies' Hospital. Abbe held positions as Professor of Didactic Surgery at the woman's medical College of New York, 1878-1880, and Professor of Surgery at the New York Post Graduate Medical School, 18881897. In 1898, he became Lecturer in Surgery at the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Robert Abbe was known for his pioneering work in intestinal anastomosis, spinal surgery, and the use of radium to treat cancer. He was a member of the American surgical association, the International Surgical Society, and the New York Surgical Society. In 1911, he became an associate fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.

This collection was assembled by Robert Abbe and contains scrapbooks and other memoranda relating to Louis Pasteur, Marie Curie, Joseph Lister, Edward Jenner, and Benjamin Rush. Included in the scrapbooks are correspondence, portraits, and newslippings. For a more detailed description of the materials included, please the "Scope and Content" note for each item.

The Robert Abbe Collection was accrued over the period of nearly 75 years. The majority of materials found in the collection were donated by Robert Abbe between 1911 and 1921 to the Mütter Museum and transferred to the Historical Medical Library in 1983. For a more detailed provenance, please see the "Custodial History" note for each item.

Scope and Contents

This scrapbook contains Benjamin Rush memorabilia collected by Robert Abbe. It includes biographical information, copies of portraits, engravings, photo prints, and correspondence. Also included are photo prints and correspondence documenting the establishment and the evolution of the Abbe Custodianship at the College of physicians of Philadelphia.

The scrapbook contains numerous pictures of Rush, including reproductions of portraits painted by Thomas Sully and Charles Wilson Pealed, as well as original engravings by St. Memin, R. W. Dodson, W. R. Jones, and David Edwin. Also present are pictures of Rush's residences in Philadelphia, "Shippen Mansion" and "Sydenham". In addition, the scrapbook contains several items signed by Rush, including an 1781 autograph letter excusing an ill soldier from militia duty.

Perhaps the most important item in the collection is a letter written by Rush in 1793 to Nicholas Belleville (1753-1831). In the letter, Rush describes a new treatment he has been using to combat Yellow fever. According to Rush, the ingredient calomel (mercurous chloride), "saved 9 out of 10 when applied in [the] early stage [of the illness]". Rush also explains that many Philadelphia physicians did not approve of this treatment. In addition to Rush memorabilia, the collection includes photographs and correspondence documenting the establishment of the "Custodianship of the Watch of Dr. Rush", later referred to as the Abbe Custodianship. Included are photographs of Rush's great granddaughter, Mary Theresa deBeelen Rush and her husband, the Rev. Richard L. Howell. Also present is a photograph and a letter from Gwendolen Whistler Howell, Rev. Howell's second wife, who presented Rush's watch to Abbe in return for his services in attending to her ailing husband. Abbe then donated the watch to the college of Physicians and set up a custodianship for it. The collection includes photo prints and correspondence from. Weir Mitchell, Simon Flexner, William H. Welch, and William W. Keen, all of whom served as Abbe Custodians between 1910 and 1927.

MSS 2/0146-03. MSS 2/0146-03: Memoranda of Edward Jenner, 1803-1817. 1 volume.
Scope and Contents

This scrapbook contains mementos of Edward Jenner collected by Robert Abbe. Included are numerous engravings dating from 1803 to 1817 and one letter written by Jenner in 1803.

The collection includes numerous portraits of Jenner by German, English, and Italian engravers, including Johann Heinrich Lips, James Hopwood, Edward Scriven, John Henry Robinson, Robert Mitchell Meadows, and John Raphael Smith.

The letter in the collection was sent by Jenner to Reverend Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776-1847) on 10 October 1803. Dibdin, a bibliographer, essayist, and poet, was writing a poem for Jenner; the poem, called "Vaccinia", was about the evils of the smallpox virus. In the letter, Jenner expresses his wish to examine Dibdin's "papers" and discusses matters concerning the publication of the poem. Jenner also mentions caring for Lord Berkeley's sick infant. The letter also addresses political issues; the United Irishman and political activist Robert Emmet (1778-1803) is mentioned. Jenner also writes, "Will Bonoparte [sic] be so rash as to shew himself upon our shores?"

MSS 2/0146-04. MSS 2/0146-04: Papers from the centenary of the birth of Louis Pasteur, 1922-1923. 1 folder.
Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of six items pertaining to the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Louis Pasteur held in Philadelphia on 27 December 1922. These items were collected by Robert Abbe, who delivered an address at the event. Included in the collection is an admission ticket; the seating list for the dinner; an announcement of the event; a program and menu; a typescript of Abbe's biography of Pasteur with an holograph outline and a clipping of Abbe's article, "Pasteur, Man and scientist".

Abbe's typescript biography of Pasteur contains the same text as his article, "Pasteur, Man and Scientist". The article appears to have been removed from a publication of the St. Luke's Hospital Alumnae Association. A postscript reveals that the piece originally appeared in the New York Times on 22 January 1923. This article was written in association with the Pasteur Centenary Celebration, but it does not appear to be a transcript of the speech Abbe presented at the event.

MSS 2/0146-06. MSS 2/0146-06: Memoranda of Mme. Marie Curie, 1898-1926. 1 volume.
Scope and Contents

This scrapbook, "Memoranda of Mme. M. Curie", contains items collected by Robert Abbe. Included in the volume are photographs of Marie Curie (ca. 1903-1920), photographs of Marie and Pierre Curie using electrometers in their laboratory, photographs and captions illustrating the production of radium (1898), clippings, and several letters(1920-1922) from Marie Curie to Robert Abbe concerning Curie's donation of an electrometer to the College of physicians of Philadelphia.

In her letter of 16 July 1920, Curie sends Abbe a description of the "Quartz Piezoelectrique", or electrometer, that she and her husband used in their early experiments with radium. Curie writes Abbe again on 2 October 1920 and explains that she will donate an item to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia; she makes two suggestions and asks Abbe to choose which gift would be more appropriate. In her letter of 1 March 1921, Curie presents the electrometer to Abbe. Also included in the volume is a personal note from Curie to Abbe (23 June 1921).

Also of interest in the scrapbook is a letter from one of abbe's colleagues (John Finley?); this colleague, who writes from Warsaw, Poland, sends Abbe a Polish stamp honoring Marie Curie.

Scope and Contents

The "Memoranda of Mme. M. Curie" volume was donated to the college of Physicians of Philadelphia by Robert Abbe on 23 May 1921. The volume was transferred from the Mutter Museum to the Historical Collections of the Library on 4 January 1983.

The volume was catalogued in 1992.

MSS 2/0146-07. MSS 2/0146-07: Memoranda of Joseph Lister, 1872-1922. 1 volume.
Scope and Contents

This scrapbook, "Memoranda of Joseph Lister", contains items collected by Robert Abbe. Included in the volume is a biography of Lister by Sir St. Clair Thomas (1859-1943);copies of photographs, engravings, and drawings of Listerand his family; pictures of the buildings where Lister lived, worked, and lectured; an autograph letter from Lister; and a letter to Abbe from Lister's biographer, Sir Rickman John Godlee (1849-1925).

The autograph letter from Lister (in French, 26 Feb. 1891)was written to one of his colleagues. In the letter,Lister briefly discusses his studies of germs and leukocytes in the blood. Also present in the scrapbook is a letter to abbe from Sir Rickman John Godlee (16 Apr. 1922);apparently, Abbe asked Godlee for information about certain glass tubes belonging to Lister. In his letter, Godlee explains that these tubes were used by Lister later in his career for bacteriological work and inoculation experiments. Godlee then provides a description of the glass tubes and how they might have been used.

Many of the printed items in the scrapbook, especially portraits of members of the Lister family, can be found in lord Lister, a biography by Sir Rickman John Godlee. In many cases, it appear as if Abbe cut the plates from this book to include in the scrapbook.
