Overview and metadata sections

Marcus A. or Mark Franklin was born in Posen, Prussia, on 6 June 1843. He married Matilda Morris in 1873; they had seven children, including physician Melvin M. Franklin. Franklin died of edema of the lungs in Philadelphia on 6 November 1916.

Franklin came to Georgia in 1860 and studied medicine under M. P. Deadwyler. He then came to Philadelphia and received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1870. Franklin then became Resident Physician at the German Hospital. From 1874 until 1885, he was Visiting Physician at the hospital. Franklin practiced in Philadelphia and, in 1880, performed the first vaginal hysterectomy in the city.

This small collection documents Marcus A. Franklin's medical education at Jefferson Medical College, 1868-1870. The collection contains Franklin's matriculation card, admission cards to lectures at Jefferson and the medical library of Pennsylvania Hospital, and an examination schedule. Faculty members whose lectures Franklin attended are: John Barclay Biddle, J. Solis Cohen, S. Henry Dickson, Samuel D. Gross, R. J. Levis, J. Aitken Meigs, Joseph Pancoast, William H. Pancoast, B. Howard Rand, and Ellerslie Wallace.

The Marcus A. Franklin Collection was donated to the Historical Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia by Douglas C. Wasley of Linwood, Pennsylvania, on 26 September 1975.

The collection was processed and catalogued in July 1990.
