John George Metcalf, Massacusetts physician and state senator, was born in either Franklin or Norfolk, Mass., on 10 Sept. 1801. He married Abigail Holbrook in 1826. Metcalf died in Mendon, Mass., on 12 or 13 Jan. 1892. Metcalf received his M.D. from Harvard University in 1826 and opened a private practice in Mendon, Mass. In Massachusetts, he held the positions of Militia Regimental Surgeon and Examining Surgeon for the Pension Board. In 1858 and 1859, Metcalf served as state senator from Massachusetts.
Financial ledger of John G. Metcalf for practice in Mendon, Mass., and surrounding Worcester County, 18441883. Includes payments in goods or services and occasional notes on inability to pay due to poverty or death. Several patients served and died in Civil War, including Samuel Everton (p. 143) "starved to death by the Rebels at Andersonville, Ga." in 1864. Includes occasional accounts with Town of Mendon for Metcalf's services as treasurer and for visiting schools.
