Abstract:

The William F. Jenks Memorial Trust was established in 1885 by Helen F. Jenks to honor the memory of her husband. The trust placed $5000 under the care of three trustees who would see that the income from the trust generated a cash prize to be awarded every three years in an essay competition sponsored by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The essays were to concern some aspect of obstetrics, gynecology, or the diseases of children. Each prize essay was distinguished by a motto and the name of its author kept in a sealed envelope; only the winning essayist was named. The President of the College, with the advice of the Jenks Trustees, first appointed the William F. Jenks Prize Committee in 1886. The committee was composed of three Fellows serving three-year terms who would consider all matters relating to the selection of the essay subject and the competition winner. Surgical Case Records of Presbyterian Hospital, 1892-1894 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Presbyterian Hospital was founded in 1871 by the Alliance of Philadelphia Presbyteries as a 45-bed facility on 2.5 acres. The incorporators declared the purpose was "to provide medical and surgical aid and nursing for the sick and disabled..." Care and nursing was granted to the indigent of Philadelphia, funded by donations from individuals and Presbyterian churches, to fulfill its Christian mission. This commitment was renewed in 1952, when the trustees of the Hospital voted against moving to the more affluent suburbs, choosing to remain in West Philadelphia. The original name was "Presbyterian Hospital of Philadelphia." It has since grown into a 300-bed institution on 16.5 acres with various nationally recognized medical institutes, specialty centers and research programs. The Hospital remained independent but formally affiliated with Penn in 1965, changing its name to Presbyterian–University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. Abstract:

The Hahnemannian Medical Institute, a student society, was organized in 1849-1850 as the Williamson Institute for students attending lectures at Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia. In 1854, the name of the organization was changed to Hahnemannian Medical Society, then, in 1864, to Hahnemannian Medical Institute. The Institute organized scientific lectures, promoted debates and quizes on academic subjects, and held annual commencements with diplomas. Students were elected "professors", later, "quizators" or "quaesitors", to examine members in specific areas. In 1885-1886, the Institute published a journal, "Medical institute of Philadelphia". One volume. Muster roll ledger recording details of Company G of the 28th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. This ledger records the physical descriptions, entry and discharge dates, and details of the deaths of those who succumbed to enemy action or illness. Also of note are interesting manuscript medical treatments for cholera, whooping cough, etc.

Abstract:

This collection contains a small amount of Robert Campbell's correspondence, 1978-1980, from his tenure as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Robert E. Campbell was born in 1931. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1957 and specialized in diagnostic radiology. In 1975, Campbell was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and served as its President from 2006 to 2008.

Abstract:

Silas Weir Mitchell was born in Philadelphia in 1829. He earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1850. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Mitchell worked as a contract surgeon in Turner's Lane Hospital in Philadelphia, an army hospital for nervous diseases. was actively involved in numerous local and national medical societies. He was founder and first president of the American Neurological Society and first president of the Philadelphia Neurological Society. In later life, Mitchell embarked on a serious literary career. He died in 1914. The Silas Weir Mitchell correspondence is a small collection which spans the years 1865 to 1938, although many years within that range are not represented. The collection is divided into three series: Letters to Mitchell, Letters from Mitchell, and Other notes. Previously catalogued as 10a 513.

Robley Dunglison autobiographical ana, circa 1852-1862 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Robley Dunglison was born in Keswick, England, on 4 January 1798. He attended the Royal College of Surgeons in 1818, received a license as surgeon apothecary from the Society of Apothecaries, and began practice in 1819. In 1823, he received an M.D. from the University of Erlangen. From 1823 to 1833, Dunglison was professor of medicine at the University of Virginia; from 1833 to 1836, he was professor of medicine at the University of Maryland. In 1836, he came to Philadelphia to become professor of the institutes of medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He held this post until 1868. He died in Philadelphia in 1869. The Robley Dunglison autobiographical ana was written by Dunglison, circa 1852, and is comprised of eight volumes, with some supplemental correspondence previously tipped in. An ana is a collection of memorable sayings of, or anecdotes and interesting information about a person or place. Abstract:

The Jones Family Papers, spanning from 1881 to 1968, documents parts of the family practice and life as a family where the patriarch is a country doctor. The collection contains 45 rpm records, photographs, correspondence, financial records in the form of patient cards and ledgers, notebooks, patient records and personal records. The Jones Family Papers focus on several of country doctors from West Virginia. William Notly Jones is the first doctor of the family, but is not well represented with this collection. The materials mainly focus on the later generations of men: Andersen Porter Jones, Latimer Porter Jones, and James Porter Jones.

The Benjamin Rush Letter and Portrait collection, dated 1809, is a small collection that contains correspondence and portraits. Benjamin Rush was born in Byberry Township, PA on January 4, 1746. He was an American physician, politician and educator who is best known for his activities during the American Revolution and for signing the Declaration of Independence. He helped found the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and founded Dickinson College, located in Carlisle, PA.
